AmeriCorps State Programs
AmeriCorps State programs are managed by Serve Virginia and organizations receive grants to plan and implement AmeriCorps programs to meet critical community needs.

AdviseVA deploys 58 AmeriCorps members in high schools across Virginia to promote post-secondary success for low-income and under-resourced students through college and career counseling and support services.
Recovery Corps addresses Virginia's substance use crisis by deploying 61 AmeriCorps members who provide peer recovery support and organizational capacity building. The program focuses on building "Recovery Capital" and serves over 1,000 individuals in recovery throughout the state.
Blue Ridge Medical Center deploys 19 AmeriCorps members across Nelson, Amherst, and Appomattox Counties to address health disparities in rural communities through community outreach, health education, and data collection services. Members conduct PRAPARE assessments for 5,920 patients to identify basic needs, connect 1,480 patients to enabling services, and serve 200 food-insecure patients through food pharmacy programs.
The City of Richmond operates RVA Health Corps, a comprehensive AmeriCorps program deploying 30 members across 16 partner organizations to tackle the city's opioid crisis, chronic disease epidemic, and environmental challenges. Members serve as Community Health Workers and Peer Recovery Specialists, providing direct services to over 9,000 individuals and treating 10 acres of parkland through the James River Park System.
College of William and Mary deploys 49 AmeriCorps members to provide in-school and out-of-school time support through Head Start and local middle schools in Williamsburg and York. The program helps children achieve school readiness by developing social and emotional skills and increasing self-confidence, purpose, and community connectedness.
The Appalachian Conservation Corps deploys 23 AmeriCorps members to complete conservation projects that protect forests, rivers, watersheds, habitats, and trails while responding to natural disasters and developing workplace skills on Virginia's public lands. By the end of the first program year, members will improve 170 acres of land and enhance 144 miles of trails and waterways.
The Corps Network is utilizing a planning grant to develop a future environmental stewardship program in the Hampton Roads region. With 40 years of experience building Conservation Corps programs nationwide, the organization will conduct feasibility studies, engage stakeholders, and design a program to address regional environmental challenges while providing workforce development opportunities for young adults.
Edu-Futuro deploys 18 AmeriCorps members across Northern Virginia to deliver comprehensive youth leadership development and workforce development programming. The program improves academic and social emotional engagement among youth, develops job readiness skills for adult participants, and engages volunteers in support of programming initiatives.
Family Scholar House operates the VA HealthCorps program, deploying 41 AmeriCorps members to address critical healthcare workforce shortages in Roanoke County and Appalachian Virginia through capacity-building services at nonprofit healthcare organizations.
GO Tutor Corps deploys 20 AmeriCorps members to provide high-dosage tutoring in math and English Language Arts to over 300 students in grades 3-12 across Northern, Central, and Piedmont Virginia, focusing on intensive academic support and skill development.
Greater Richmond Fit4Kids tackles childhood obesity and food insecurity through 15 AmeriCorps members who deliver nutrition education and physical activity programs in schools. The program serves over 7,400 students across the Richmond region with evidence-based interventions including Learning Gardens, physical activity clubs, recess coaching, and bicycle safety instruction to promote active living and healthy lifestyles.
IALR deploys 48 AmeriCorps members to support upper elementary and middle school students in Danville, Pittsylvania, and Martinsville with social and emotional learning and tutoring services both in and out of school. The program is expanding to include youth mental health and public health components for 2025-2026, with dedicated mental health members in each local school division and community health members addressing needs through education, mentorship, and referrals. The program also plans to add training positions that prepare members with industry certification and pre-apprenticeship opportunities in high-demand sectors.
The International Rescue Committee deploys 10 AmeriCorps members across Charlottesville, Richmond, Albemarle, Henrico, and Chesterfield to support refugees through employment training and placement, youth development, health navigation and wellness services, and organizational capacity building.
Teach for America supports 35 AmeriCorps members through the DC region who commit to teaching for two years in low-income and under-resourced schools in Arlington and Alexandria, addressing educational inequity through direct classroom instruction.
United Way of Central Virginia operates an AmeriCorps program addressing the critical intersection of workforce shortages and kindergarten readiness in their region. The program deploys 21 AmeriCorps members across four sites to create immediate impact through improved kindergarten readiness for 150-250 children and long-term systemic change through sustainable workforce development in early childhood education.
United Way of Henry County and Martinsville deploys 33 AmeriCorps members to provide tutoring and classroom support for PreK-2nd grade students in Martinsville and Henry County, focusing on improving academic performance in early elementary education.
The University of Virginia will develop the Charlottesville Regional Youth Mental Health Corps, engaging members through two intersecting tracks to address persistent achievement gaps, rising youth mental health needs, and workforce shortages in licensed mental health providers. The first track would engage members in supporting youth from low-wealth communities with comprehensive college and career support services. The second track would engage graduate students as members to provide direct mental health services to youth in local school divisions and out-of-school programs.
Virginia Learns implements "AmeriCorps Nextcelerate," a high-impact literacy tutoring program targeting significant achievement gaps in central Virginia schools. The program places 16 AmeriCorps members in Title I elementary schools in Henrico County and Richmond to provide intensive literacy support to 384 K-3 students.
