National Service Awards

AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors members serving in Virginia who have performed outstanding service to their communities are honored annually through this recognition program. Honorees will be celebrated during the virtual 2024 Virginia Volunteerism Summit. Watch the 2023 awards event here.

The annual National Service Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • AmeriCorps State Member of the Year (Members from 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 program are eligible)
  • AmeriCorps VISTA Member of the Year (Members who served in 2023 are eligible)
  • AmeriCorps Seniors Member of the Year (Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, and RSVP
    volunteers who served in 2023 are eligible)
  • AmeriCorps NCCC Team of the Year (NCCC Project Teams who completed projects in Virginia in
    2023 are eligible)
  • AmeriCorps Alum of the Year (from any stream of service or year prior to 2023) *alumni must live in Virginia

These awards are presented in partnership by Serve Virginia and the Virginia Service Foundation.

2024 Guidelines

How do I submit a nomination?

  • Please submit all nominations through the online form.
  • The nomination process for the 2024 National Service Awards will be open until 5:00pm ET on March 20, 2024. Honorees will be notified in April, and recognized at the 2024 Virginia Volunteerism Summit, May 15-16.
  • The questions on the nomination form are available in this National Service Awards information flyer, to help prepare your answers before submitting the form.

How long is the nomination period?

  • All nominations must be RECEIVED, submitted online, no later than 5:00pm ET on March 20th, 2024. Any incomplete nomination or nomination received after 5:00pm ET on the deadline date will not be considered.

Who is eligible to nominate someone for the AmeriCorps State, AmeriCorps VISTA, Senior Companion, Foster Grandparent, or RSVP awards?

  • Anyone not related to the honoree is eligible to nominate a member or alum for an award. This can include grantees, sponsors, site supervisors, community partners, other members, etc.

Can I nominate any alumni for the alumni award?

  • Alums eligible for the award must have served in an AmeriCorps or AmeriCorps Seniors program. The alum must currently reside in Virginia, but does not need to have served in Virginia.

How many total awards will be given?

  • A total of four awards will be given:
    • AmeriCorps State
    • AmeriCorps VISTA
    • AmeriCorps Seniors
    • AmeriCorps NCCC
    • AmeriCorps/AmeriCorps Seniors Alum

May I nominate someone for a category that is not on the nomination form?

  • Nominees must be eligible under one of the identified four categories.

Who reviews the nominations?

  • A scoring committee of members from the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism and the Virginia Service Foundation will score nominations with support from Serve Virginia.

When will I be notified regarding the status of my nomination?

  • You will receive email confirmation that your nomination has been successfully submitted.
  • You will be notified if your nominee has been selected as an honoree in April 2024.

What are the details regarding the 2024 Virginia National Service Awards Ceremony?

  • Winners will be recognized during the virtual 2024 Virginia Volunteerism Summit on May 16th, and invited to be recognized at the Governor’s Awards event in the fall.
