The Governor’s Volunteerism & Community Service Awards recognize Virginians who serve across the Commonwealth. Individuals, groups, and organizations invest their time and talent in helping others and creating positive change where they live.
Volunteers serve others in a multitude of ways – though many never get the recognition they deserve. Presented by the Governor of Virginia, in partnership with Serve Virginia, the Virginia Service Foundation and the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism, these awards recognize and celebrate the impact of Virginia’s outstanding volunteers.
Nominations are open now. The deadline for nominations is June 30.

With the support of Serve Virginia, the Virginia Service Foundation, the River Counties Community Foundation, and the Robert B. Lantz Foundation, a coalition of more than 50 organizations across the region created Volunteer River Counties, an online volunteer hub to help you discover volunteer opportunities in the region, whether you’re a local resident or planning a vacation to the area. Across the Commonwealth, nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, and others can apply for up to $250 of Day of Service Mini Grant funding from the Virginia Service Foundation to support projects that engage individual and group volunteers in opportunities to serve others and reflect on civic engagement.
Across the Commonwealth, nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, and others plan National Day of Service projects in their communities, honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January and 9/11 Remembrance Day in September. Serve Virginia and the Virginia Service Foundation support these efforts through mini grant funding opportunities as well as promotional assistance to engage community members in volunteerism.
Organizations can apply for up to $250 of mini grant funding from the Virginia Service Foundation to support National Days of Service projects that engage individual and group volunteers in
opportunities to serve others and reflect on civic engagement.
Leveraging AmeriCorps resources to address critical community needs, the Youth Mental Health Corps in Virginia will serve thousands of youth and young adults who are affected by mental health challenges while also building “service-to-career” pathways for Virginians to gain experience in the behavioral health field.
Did you know? Mental health and substance use disorder affects young Virginians at higher rates than peers in other states. That’s why Serve Virginia is joining forces with 10 other states to recruit, train, and deploy the nation’s first Youth Mental Health Corps to engage young adults in local AmeriCorps service to support youth.
