The University of Virginia – Virginia College Advising Corps AmeriCorps program has expanded to Southwest Virginia! The College Advising Corps places recent graduates in public Virginia high schools to assist students with college admission, financial aid and scholarship applications. The program’s new partners are John I. Burton High School in Norton City and Central High School in Wise County. Recent graduates from the University of Virginia's College at Wise, Sass Sloce and Cassandra Blackwell, will serve as the inaugural college advisors. In addition, the program has also entered into a new partnership with Amelia County High School. Returning college adviser Stephannie Tamayo will launch the program model at the school. Guides spend 40 hours/week mentoring students and creating educational programming to students and their families in underserved areas. This is an exciting development for this program to expand their services to more under-served students across the Commonwealth!
