Mayors and county leaders from across the nation will honor and celebrate National Service on April 4th for the fifth annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service. As the nation’s mayors and county officials are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges, this event highlights their impact and thanks those who serve. On this day, officials are holding public events across Virginia to highlight the value of national service to the nation’s cities and counties. • Richmond Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and Henrico Deputy County Manager for Community Operations Tim Foster will host a special celebration event will be held at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center (1440 N Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA 23223) at 9 a.m. Following the ceremony, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members and volunteers will participate in a large-scale service project at historic Evergreen Cemetery (Evergreen Cemetery, 50 Evergreen Road, Richmond, VA 23223). • Hampton Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck  and William Massey, CEO of the Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA), will honor and thank National Service members at an event at Hampton City Hall comples on Lincoln Street at 3:30 p.m.  National Service members will present items collected and organized for citizens served by the PAA Meals on Wheels project.
• Crewe National Service members with the Virginia State Parks - DCR AmeriCorps program will participate in a service project to clear undergrowth as part of the development of a new town park from noon-4 p.m.
• Gate City Appalachian Community Action RSVP members will be hosting a service project that allows volunteers to go out into the community and make minor home repairs in the community. They will be working with the Volunteer Generation Fund program at their agency on this event.

Stay tuned for more event details! Last year, 3,539 elected officials representing more than 178 million citizens participated in the fourth-annual Mayor and County Day. One of the ways national service is making an huge impact on communities is through the Employers of National Service Initiative. Virginia is one of the first states to be named a statewide Employer of National Service and, on a local level, supporting this program will allow communities to have new access to AmeriCorps alums as a dedicated, highly qualified, and mission-oriented pool of potential employees.
