Serve Virginia announced AmeriCorps grants to support 23 organizations across the Commonwealth in meeting the pressing needs of communities in the coming year, representing a total investment of more than $6.7 million. AmeriCorps is the largest funder of national service in the country, matching organizations with individuals in order to address pressing challenges impacting communities. Serve Virginia coordinates the annual grant funding.  

“Through its unique public-private partnership, AmeriCorps offers a critical mechanism for leveraging federal funding to meet community needs, benefitting communities across Virginia,” said Serve Virginia Director Kathy J. Spangler. As part of this, $4.7 million in operational funding has been granted to 12 organizations to support AmeriCorps program implementation: 

• Aspire! Afterschool Learning (Arlington), to provide a critical link between school, afterschool, and home/community 

• Blue Ridge Medical Center (Nelson County & Appomattox), to serve increase access to information and resources to address chronic disease 

• Carroll County Public Schools (Carroll, Galax, Smyth & Patrick), to tutor PreK through 8th grade students 

• CASA (Northern Virginia), to provide financial literacy education, citizenship and legal support, and youth education 

• College of William and Mary (Williamsburg & York), to provide in- and out-of-school support through Head Start and local middle schools 

• Edu-Futuro (Northern Virginia), to deliver comprehensive youth leadership development and workforce development programming 

• Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (Danville, Pittsylvania & Martinsville), to support upper elementary and middle school students, in and out of school 

• International Rescue Committee (Richmond & Charlottesville), to provide individual and organizational assistance to support refugees 

• RVA Health Corps (Richmond), to serve as community health workers providing support in Richmond's low-income neighborhoods 

• Teach for America D.C. and Virginia (Arlington & Alexandria), to teach for two years in low-income and under-resourced schools 

• United Way of Henry County and Martinsville (Martinsville & Henry County),
  to tutor and assist with classroom support for PreK through 2nd grade students  

• The Virginia College Advising Corps (Statewide), to serve in high schools promoting post-secondary success for low-income and under-resourced students

In addition, the following organizations will receive planning grants totaling $2 million to support the planning and development of future AmeriCorps programs:

• Horizon Behavioral Health (Lynchburg & Surrounding Areas)

• State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (Statewide) 
• United Way of Central Virginia (Lynchburg & Surrounding Areas) 
• United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg (Richmond & Petersburg Areas) 
• United Way of the National Capital Area (Northern Virginia) 
• Virginia Learns (Statewide)
