Job Search & Career Resources
- You can receive free job search support, resume and cover letter review, and interview prep – as well as accessing training support and other educational opportunities for those who qualify – by visiting any of dozens of locally-administered Virginia Career Works center across the Commonwealth. - The Virginia state government currently has over 4,500 available career opportunities in a broad variety of fields, with locations statewide. Visit jobs.virginia.gov to search for a mission-focused opportunity that works for you.
- Job Fair for Federal Workers and Contractors on Saturday, May 3: Recruiters and hiring managers from a variety of employment sectors will participate including from health care, information technology, local government, the military, consumer electronics, accounting and finance, and federal government professional services. Hosted by Congressman Don Beyer, the City of Alexandria, the City of Falls Church, Arlington County, and Fairfax County. Complementary professional photographic headshots will also be offered.
- Make plans to attend the free event, "Excelling Beyond the Federal Workforce" on Friday, May 9, 9am-12pm, in Alexandria, VA. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) in partnership with the City of Alexandria are hosting a morning of workshops and one-on-one interaction opportunities for former federal workers and contractors. Attendees can attend different workshops to freshen up on resume writing and interviewing, as well as practice one-on-one interviewing with skilled SHRM employees. In addition, the City of Alexandria will provide information about current job openings and other resources will be available.

Upskilling & Reskilling
- The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) offers a variety of credentials along with programs that you may be eligible for that can provide financial assistance, like G3, FastForward, and more. Visit vccs.edu for more information and tools to help determine whether these programs may be right for you.
- Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), in partnership with NVC and Virginia Career Works, is supporting displaced federal workers and government contractors through NOVAnext, a program offering opportunities to reskill, upskill, and re-enter the workforce. Eligible participants can access tuition-free courses in high-demand fields like IT, program management, human resources, and Generative AI, along with expert-led workshops on job search strategies.
- The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority offers career resources as well as a recorded webinar to support you in looking for a job.
- Bay Consortium Region Virginia Career Works Centers offer a range of employment and training programs for job seekers, including:

- For individuals up through age 24, the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act Youth Program offers Job Preparation Skills, Apprenticeship Opportunities, Interview Coaching, Training Opportunities, Resume Building, and Paid and Unpaid Work Experience.
- If you are a Virginian with a disability, the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) can connect you to meaningful careers and job training programs in high-demand, high-growth industries. Working with a vocational rehabilitation counselor, DARS can help you set and achieve career goals and pursue training, apprenticeships, certifications, or credentials tailored to your needs. Mental Health Support & Other Assistance
For other needs presented by this sudden transition, there are free resources available both in-person and virtually.
- For mental health support, call or text 988 for 24/7 support. By calling 988, you can get free, immediate help from a trained crisis worker 24/7 if you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support.

- For other services, like referrals for housing or utility assistance, information about finding childcare, and more, call 211 or text “service” to 247-211 to be matched with a live agent to help provide resources for a wide range of community needs.
- Hunger Free America Resources
