Virginia Department of Social Service home office staff members and Richmond area AmeriCorps members volunteered for the Richmond Public Schools Homeless Education Program Back to School Event Thursday, September 1, at the Downtown YMCA in Richmond. More than 1,700 students were invited to attend this event which offered school supplies, clothing items, personal care items, and food donations for families and students in need.
Volunteers helped unload truckloads of donations, set up for the event, and staffed the donation tables during the event. "The families and students were so appreciative of the opportunity and the volunteers seemed to find this a rewarding experience. This was a great demonstration of teamwork and collective impact for RPS and the community," said Lorie Coker, Richmond Public Schools Volunteer Coordinator.
