As Virginia's AmeriCorps Brand Ambassador for August, Sean Fournia serves as a member with the City of Richmond - Richmond AmeriCorps Healthy Futures Project. This team is tasked with helping to fight the opioid epidemic. "I'm blessed to provide peer recovery support services to CARITAS at
The Healing Place to combat this crisis," he says. The Healing Place provides a pathway to recovery for men struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Sean serves by connecting individuals to resources that reinforce recovery. Sean's story is truly inspiring. "I was homeless, helpless and spiritually broken," he says of his life before his recovery. In fact, Sean had been coming to The Healing Place as a client since 2007. He says, "This AmeriCorps service experience is indescribably wonderful and brings meaning and purpose to my life today and fills me with love. It's my small contribution to help make our community a stronger, healthier and safer place for the future."
After Sean completed The Healing Place program, he entered the
CARITAS Works workforce development program. "This helped take me from unemployable to an AmeriCorps Service member. I learned how to overcome the barriers of my past, including a criminal history and how to obtain a job in an IT field."
