Service and Volunteerism
Service and volunteerism strengthen Virginia’s communities by addressing local needs, expanding access to support, and improving quality of life for residents. They also build social capital by connecting people across backgrounds, fostering civic engagement, and encouraging shared responsibility for community outcomes. Over 2.2 million Virginians volunteered in 2023.
In addition, service experiences develop skills, leadership, and career pathways that contribute to a resilient statewide workforce and long-term economic vitality. Volunteering contributed over $5.2 billion in economic value last year alone.
