We’re proud to have participated in @Serve_Virginia and the Virginia Service Foundation’s Virginia Community Engagement Index; a first-of-its-kind study to understand the state of service, volunteerism, and civic action in Virginia, as well as identify community priorities on the state and local levels.

As part of the study, we helped answer the question, “Why do Virginians begin volunteering?” Our response along with those from other organizations across the state concluded that many Virginians spiritual beliefs or houses of worship were their first entry points into volunteerism or service. For many others, personal experience and education were key forces in getting them involved — whether they had been personally affected or helped by others, witnessed an injustice that inspired them to act, or were compelled by learning about an issue.
