Adaptive Gymnastics provides children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the sport of gymnastics, regardless of
physical or intellectual ability. Founded in 2019, the program has grown from a single volunteer and four athletes to over 65
participants, serving as a model of inclusive, evidence-based programming that blends athletics, therapy, and community
support.
The program is led by dedicated medical student volunteers who develop lesson plans grounded in clinical research. Beyond physical skill development, Adaptive Gymnastics fosters confidence, perseverance, and social connection, giving children—and their families—a supportive environment in which to thrive. For parents and caregivers, classes provide a much-needed respite and a space for peer connection, guidance, and shared understanding.
Through partnerships with USA Gymnastics and local disability networks, Adaptive Gymnastics has become a blueprint for similar programs across Virginia and the nation. Volunteers’ commitment extends beyond instruction; they set up accessible equipment, manage sensory needs, and offer compassionate guidance during moments of vulnerability, creating a safe, welcoming, and enriching experience for every participant.
Adaptive Gymnastics instills lessons in empathy, inclusion, and leadership in its volunteers, demonstrating how service can
simultaneously transform lives and communities. This program exemplifies the power of dedication, creativity, and heart in making the world a more inclusive place for children with disabilities.
