Camp Holiday Trails (CHT) is a nonprofit camp located in Charlottesville, Virginia, dedicated to creating an empowering camp experience for children and teens with medical needs. Since its founding in 1974, CHT has relied on the exceptional contributions of volunteers to fulfill its mission. Central to this mission is the volunteer Medical Team, known at Camp as the “Med Team”—a group of physicians, nurses, students, and other healthcare professionals who provide expert care in a dynamic and inclusive camp environment.
In summer 2024 alone, 68 medical volunteers donated their time and expertise, contributing to the safety and well-being of campers while ensuring they could participate fully in camp activities. Their efforts represent an incredible $365,000 in in-kind medical volunteer time in 2024. Over the past 50 years, thousands of volunteers have supported Camp Holiday Trails, with the Med Team playing a vital role in ensuring the health and happiness of every camper.
The volunteer Med Team is crucial to supporting campers with a wide range of pediatric diagnoses in a setting that prioritizes fun and growth. Beyond their professional roles, Med Team members embrace the spirit of Camp—joining in on songs at Flagpole, gathering around campfires, and participating in wish boat ceremonies that bring the Camp community together.
The Med Team is comprised of individuals with EMT, RN, NP, PA, DO, and MD certifications, along with opportunities for fourth-year medical students, nursing students, and NP or PA certifications to obtain clinical hours towards their degree. Med Team members gain the opportunity to expand their professional experience while building connections and creating lasting memories with campers and staff alike.
The volunteer Med Team exemplifies Camp Holiday Trails’ commitment to providing transformative experiences for children and teens with medical needs. Their dedication ensures that Camp is a place where every child can thrive, explore, and grow.
