After 26 years of distinguished service as a U.S. Navy Senior Chief, Eliot Carlson chose not to retire from service—but to redefine it. As the volunteer Executive Director of Hero Kids Foundation (HKF), Eliot channels his lifelong commitment to duty into supporting military and first responder families through innovative, healing focused programs.
Under his leadership, HKF has achieved a 20% increase in funding and launched its first formal volunteer program, mobilizing more than 400 volunteers in 2024. Eliot’s strategic partnerships have expanded the organization’s reach, creating lasting community connections and ensuring sustainability for years to come.
His creativity and compassion are perhaps best exemplified through two groundbreaking initiatives: “Calm Waters, Calm Mind,”
a nature-based wellness program using donated canoes, and the Trail of Heroes—Virginia’s first fully accessible, all-terrain nature trail for individuals with mobility challenges. These programs have redefined inclusive access to outdoor therapy and become models for other communities across the Commonwealth.
Even while balancing full-time work and caregiving responsibilities for family members, Eliot remains steadfast in his mission to “Give Light to Those Who Serve at Home.” His leadership is not symbolic —it is deeply personal, built on empathy, action, and perseverance.
Through every challenge, Eliot demonstrates what it means to live a life of service. His vision, resilience, and compassion continue to inspire a stronger, more connected Virginia.
