Story of Service: Hunter LeClair

Hunter LeClair was Bay Aging’s first AmeriCorps VISTA member in 2016. The focus of her VISTA project was to build capacity of the Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Housing Coalition, the region’s homeless response system recognized by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Projects focused on grant research, policy creation, and data analysis. While Bay Aging held the role of Lead Agency for this coalition, Bay Aging did not directly administer any homeless services. Story of Service: The Berry Family

The Berry Family of Harrisonburg, Virginia, saw a local need related to food insecurity in their area. Dubbed the "Brent Berry Food Drive," in honor of their son, Brent, the family took the initiative to help meet the need. This is a massive drive that they have conducted for 15 years, with the 2022 drive being the largest ever, collecting an estimated $65,000 in food and personal hygiene items for community members in need. Martin Novak was recently retired and looking for opportunities to volunteer in Northern Virginia when he discovered Volunteer Fairfax and their AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP Northern Virginia program through a Google search. He applied to the program and recalls, "I was initially overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices of volunteer activities available.
