Kimbra, with the Rappahannock Goodwill – Goodskills Literacy Corps Americorps program in Fredericksburg, says the experience has opened up a whole new world to her. “I’ve had an exciting service year and as I begin on my second term I am elated on what I will discover about myself and others that I tutor,” she says. “The most rewarding experience is meeting and interacting with a diversity of people. This volunteer position has enlightened me in enormous ways. Between the personal development training, conferences, workshops and online studies — I feel confident that AmeriCorps will propel me into being an unrestricted mouthpiece for volunteers around the community and the country. During a recent service project in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the AmeriCorps NCCC Coast 2 Team worked with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing hunger in the Central Rappahannock River Region by distributing millions of pounds of food annually. However, the team's main assignment did not involve food distribution. Clifford Yee is a member and former chair of the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism as well as the treasurer and former chair of the Virginia Service Foundation. He reflects, "I began serving on the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism in 2020 to deepen my commitment to civic engagement, eventually having the honor of chairing the Board from 2022-2024. Debbie Farrar is a retired police officer and has also been a group exercise instructor for most of her adult life. As a volunteer, she currently teaches SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life), an evidence-based fall prevention program centered around a strength, balance and fitness program for adults 65 and older.
