The award recognizes Brubaker’s dedication to advancing agricultural literacy in her community for more than 10 years. As a recent high school graduate and 2024 Governor's Volunteerism & Community Service Award honoree, Ashley Coulson has been a dedicated volunteer in Y Street, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth's youth-led statewide initiative, where she served 115 service hours in the past year. She helped lead the program's Share the Air campaign, working towards tobacco-free and e-cigarette-free parks, playgrounds, beaches, and trails across the Commonwealth. Her service included organizing booths at community events, gauging Virginians' attitudes toward tobacco-free outdoor policies, and meeting with elected officials and community leaders. As home to the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) acts as a regional catalyst for economic transformation. AmeriCorps members at IALR currently serve as STEM and literacy tutors and developers. They primarily assist upper elementary through middle school students in schools and at out-of-school partner sites. During a recent service project in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the AmeriCorps NCCC Coast 2 Team worked with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing hunger in the Central Rappahannock River Region by distributing millions of pounds of food annually. However, the team's main assignment did not involve food distribution.
