The Virginia Community Health Worker Association (VACHWA) is dedicated to advancing the role and recognition of Community Health Workers (CHWs) / Promotores de Salud across Virginia. Their mission is to build a strong, connected CHW workforce that promotes health equity, addresses social determinants of health, and amplifies the voices of community members. Founded in 2014, the VACHWA story is one of hope and dreams—and VACHWA’s success has become a reality thanks to the tireless dedication of CHWs across the Commonwealth, turning vision into action.
VACHWA has a committed network of approximately 500 active members, many of whom regularly volunteer in community events, gatherings, faith-based organizations, and local initiatives. The network also includes a small core volunteer team that supports a range of activities such as coordinating outreach efforts, assisting with health screenings, helping organize the annual statewide CHW-Doula Conference and VACHWA Gala, providing translation and interpretation for Spanish-speaking residents, and mentoring emerging CHWs. Together, they contribute hundreds of hours annually to strengthen health and well-being across Virginia.
For example, through the dedication of its members and volunteers, VACHWA has reached and supported thousands of Virginians through culturally relevant health education, community outreach, and connection to critical resources.
In addition, they help hundreds of CHWs access training, professional development, and certification pathways, strengthening the statewide workforce. They also host major statewide gatherings—including their annual CHW-Doula Conference and VACHWA Gala—that foster collaboration, skill-building, and advocacy among CHWs, doulas, public health professionals, and community partners. As the 5th Annual VACHWA Conference approaches, they rely on countless volunteers to help bring together hundreds of professionals and community members for three days of learning, collaboration, and celebration.
Further, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, VACHWA partnered with a local agency to distribute PPE to CHWs. These CHWs worked tirelessly to educate, navigate, and conduct outreach, often investing additional personal time to ensure the welfare of their communities.
Looking ahead, VACHWA is expanding its leadership development programs, launching a CHW Employer-Friendly Recognition designation, and deepening its partnerships with healthcare, education, and justice system stakeholders. They envision a future where CHWs are embedded across all sectors of health and human services, creating stronger, healthier communities for all Virginians.
