Victoria Proffitt, Commissioner of Revenue Chesapeake, is a member of the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism and recently received the Volunteer Hampton Roads Volunteer Award for “Community Volunteer Group” with Tiffany Boyle, Commissioner of Revenue Newport News, on behalf of the Virginia Commissioners of Revenue Association (CORVA) and their efforts in “Commissioners and Cans,” an annual food drive that has donated thousands of meals to community members in need.
Seven years ago, CORVA started the annual food drive to help refill the food bank shelves and to serve the people who have food insecurities. It has turned into a fun competition to get every locality to participate and make a greater impact across the Commonwealth. Victoria reflects, “Service to others takes the focus off yourself and onto others that are in need or receiving the service and gives you hope and purpose. To me, service and volunteerism in every aspect brings hope to the one or ones you are serving. Without helping each other there is no hope.”
Indeed, Victoria learned the importance of volunteering and giving back at an early age. She recalls, “I have volunteered for many different organizations and initiatives throughout my life. My father was a pastor, and I watched my mother and father serve many in need for many different reasons. I believe that God put me in this world to help and serve others, which is why my career path has led to positions of service whether elected to serve the people of Chesapeake or the students at Chesapeake Public Schools, as well as my years of service within my church in various positions or leadership roles.
Regarding her current role as a member of the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism, Victoria says, “It was an honor to be asked to serve on the Governor’s Advisory Board. It is a perfect fit for me as I believe in service to others and have lived it my whole life. I have been on the board since November 2024 and look forward to each aspect of this position.”
