As a member of the Virginia Volunteerism Network, Volunteer Alexandria (VolALX) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, providing residents of Alexandria, Virginia, and the DMV area, with a community resource for volunteerism. Since its founding in 1980, VolALX has served as a link between individual and group volunteers and nonprofit organizations and city agencies in need of support.
VolALX works in partnership with nonprofits, government and the business community to inspire people to volunteer, and to engage volunteers in activities that in turn strengthen the community. With a mission to inspire and mobilize people to volunteer for a stronger Alexandria community, VolALX’s vision is that all are engaged to make a difference in Alexandria through volunteering.
Including an annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, VolALX programs, services, and events are designed to engage people in service and recognize them for it. In 2024, VolALX honored 1,983 volunteers during Global Volunteer Month, and engaged over 160 volunteers to serve more than 750 children and 300 families by implementing a toy collection and distribution.
VolALX also offers a service-learning program for middle and high school students. During a half-day or full-day session, students learn more about social issues facing Alexandrians and how nonprofits address these issues in order to earn direct service hours and service learning hours. They use the P.A.R.E. model, which offers a structured approach to high-quality service-learning experiences, framed by the key components of Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Evaluation.
Further, VolALX is a member of the Points of Light Global Affiliate Network and serves on several community committees and coalitions including the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria Executive Committee, Alexandria Council of Human Service Organizations Executive and Membership Committee, Youth Service Coordinating Council, Youth Support Network, Alexandria Mentoring Partnership, and Hunger Free Alexandria.
