National Service in Virginia

AmeriCorps is the largest funder of national service in the country, with most of these federal funds passing through state service commissions, like Serve Virginia, that oversee state and local funding to make a tangible impact on education, environmental stewardship, public safety, health, and economic opportunity.

Leveraging National Service Impact for Virginians

In 2023, AmeriCorps, a federal agency, invested more than $14.2 million in federal funding to develop cost-effective community solutions and support the work of more than 3,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors serving at 363 AmeriCorps sites in communities across Virginia, including schools, food banks, shelters, health clinics, youth centers, veterans facilities, and other nonprofit and faith-based organizations.

Through a unique public-private partnership, AmeriCorps and its partners generated more than $5.3 million in outside resources from businesses, foundations, public agencies, and other sources in Virginia last year. How does AmeriCorps work?

AmeriCorps brings people together to tackle the country’s most pressing challenges through multiple streams of service, including:
  • AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) offers key capacity-building support for addressing poverty through the placement of talented, passionate individuals.
  • AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) offers short-term support for service projects lasting 3 to 13 weeks through regional teams of 18-26 year-olds.
  • AmeriCorps Seniors offers meaningful ways to engage seniors in supporting communities.
  • AmeriCorps State offers grant funding to support the placement of AmeriCorps members who deliver services alongside staff.

National Service as Workforce Development in Virginia

Managing an annual portfolio of over $4 million, Serve Virginia helps AmeriCorps State grantees prepare their applications and budgets, support their members, measure their impact, and much more. By coordinating these AmeriCorps grants, Serve Virginia assists these groups in recruiting, training and placing AmeriCorps members to meet community needs.

In addition to meeting community needs, service-to-career pathways within AmeriCorps programs create diverse talent pipelines, increase the capacity of nonprofit and public agencies, address pressing community and state challenges, and have positive impacts on the AmeriCorps members themselves. Working hand-in-hand with local partners, AmeriCorps members helped tutor and support children and youth across Virginia, connected community members to essential public services, helped residents access higher education, and enhanced public land.
