We are thrilled that Governor Glenn Youngkin officially declared April 21- 27 as Virginia Volunteer Week. To celebrate, the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) and Virginia State Parks have partnered to host volunteer opportunities for state employees all week in state parks across the Commonwealth—especially on Earth Day, April 22!
Parking for state employee volunteers is FREE and some opportunities are family friendly and make good team building exercises. Check out the list of state parks and complete an application to volunteer.
If you are not a state employee or if there is not a state park near you, you can find additional volunteer opportunities at your local Volunteer Center. You can also learn more about employee volunteerism and discover ways to engage your colleagues and workplace in service through the Making Social Impact Accessible for All Employee Roles Settings report from Points of Light.
Share your volunteering photos! DHRM would like to feature employee volunteer photos in the Employee Experience magazine that is published quarterly. Submit photos here.
Please note: In accordance with the provisions of DHRM Policy 4.40, employees seeking to use School Assistance and Volunteer Service Leave for non-group opportunities will need to coordinate their volunteer time through the Virginia Association for Parks (VAFP), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Virginia’s national, state, and regional parks. To do so, volunteering employees should provide notice to each volunteer site that their hours are being worked through VAFP. In return, the volunteer site will provide a certified letter attesting to the volunteer hours worked.
