In honor of National Volunteer Week, we're spotlighting individuals and groups whose support of volunteerism and service make significant impacts across Virginia. A critical aspect of volunteerism in the Commonwealth can be found in the Virginia Volunteer Center Network, with hubs located throughout the state to assist in building volunteer capacity in nonprofits and helping individuals and groups find service opportunities that interest them. The Volunteer Center Network boasts twenty organizations serving diverse communities and regions, and we invite you to get to know one of the Volunteer Centers in the northern part of the state, Volunteer Alexandria.
Volunteer Alexandria inspires and connects people to improve their community. Their volunteers solve local problems and serve as a powerful force toward a healthy, productive, and engaged community. Since its founding in 1980, Volunteer Alexandria has served as a link between volunteers, nonprofit organizations, and city agencies, working to inspire people to volunteer and to engage volunteers in activities that in turn strengthen the community. Their vision is that all are engaged to make a difference in Alexandria through volunteering.
As part of that work, Volunteer Alexandria recognizes and honors the work of volunteers and businesses that support local nonprofit organizations and community. This year, they have thanked more than 1,800 volunteers in the area and are now a certified organization to present the President’s Volunteer Service Awards, through which 60 volunteers will receive a recognition.
In addition, Volunteer Alexandria honors outstanding volunteers during the annual Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria awards event, held during National Volunteer Week this year, on April 27. This year's honorees include:
