As one of our January 2024 Serve Virginia Honor Roll honorees, Becky McCully’s volunteer service in the theatre and choral programs at Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) in Ashland, Virginia, has had a profound impact on both students and the broader community. Beyond the tangible contributions to the success of productions, she has played a pivotal role in creating a vibrant and inclusive artistic environment.
She has been volunteering at PHHS since 2021 but previously volunteered by mentoring theatre students when she lived in Texas. By offering her time and expertise, she has provided essential support to students, helping them develop not only artistic skills but also crucial life skills such as teamwork, communication, and time management. The collaborative nature of theatre and choral productions fosters a sense of community and belonging, and her contributions support a positive and supportive culture.
Further, the impact of her volunteering in these programs extends beyond the immediate school community. Theatre and choral performances often serve as cultural connections for the wider community, bringing people together and fostering an appreciation for the arts. Becky continues to play a key role in organizing events, managing logistics, and ensuring successful productions, thereby contributing to the cultural enrichment of the community.
As a student herself, Becky was in theatre and choir in middle and high school. She recalls, “It changed my life! Think about being an awkward teen, not knowing where you fit in, and then finding your place in the theatre… where you can be your weird self.” She continued acting and even has an IMDB page under her maiden name. Becky’s dedication in high school theatre and choral programs not only enhances the educational experience for students but also creates lasting connections, promoting a lifelong appreciation for the arts among both participants and audiences.
